Opportunity for Iraqis Living in Minnesota to Create Books or Short Stories

Posted on July 7, 2012 by

What: workshop July 16 – 19 for Iraqis and Iraqi-Americans in Minnesota to create a book or short story. The book could be about experiences coming to Minnesota, living in Iraq during the Iraq War, or another topic that participants determine with the project director.

Through the workshop, participants have conversations with staff about what they would like to tell others in their book or short story. Staff members transcribe conversations and help participants compile information and stories into a short book that IARP publishes and give to participants, as well as put online as part of a larger library of Iraqi and US veteran books. Previous books produced can be seen at http://www.veteransbookproject.com/the-books/ (most books online are US veterans because this is the first year of working with Iraqis).
Participants receive a free copy of their book and a certificate of completion at the end of the workshop.
IARP covers all costs associated with the workshop (transportation, lodging in Twin Cities if needed, food during the workshop). Books can be any length (some are 10 pages and some are 150), with or without photos, Arabic and/or English, and with the author’s real name or a pseudonym.
