Art Internship

About the Iraqi and American Reconciliation Project (IARP):

The Iraqi and American Reconciliation Project (IARP) partners with the Muslim Peacemaker Teams (MPT) in Iraq to build communities of peace and establish long-term, personal connections between Iraqis and Americans. Our programs include exchanging handwritten letters between Iraqi and American students, expanding a Sister City relationship between Minneapolis and Najaf, showcasing Iraqi art in the U.S., educating local schools and communities about Iraq and nonviolence, and partnering with Iraqis to provide clean water for Iraqi schools and hospitals.

Art Internship:

The Art Intern will work with IARP’s Art Director to manage and build the Iraqi Art Project, working directly and indirectly with both Iraqi artists and the local art community. The Iraq Art Project brings art and culture from Iraq with images, created by Iraqi artists, of the people and the land of Iraq. Building on the transformative power of art, this project helps to personalize relationships with Iraqis. It bridges American communities with Iraqi artists.

The Art Intern will research art shows and other potential locations to display Iraqi art (such as coffeeshops and galleries), prepare art pieces for display, maintain catalogue of art, and be given significant responsibility and opportunity for development of the Project.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Helping with promotion of Iraqi Art Project and IARP generally
  • Researching potential art shows and other locations to display Iraqi art
  • Developing new sources of funding for the Iraqi Art Project and IARP
  • Assisting with special events and helping prepare art pieces for display
  • Updating/Assisting with design for IARP website, newsletter, flyers, social media, etc.
  • Develop new art projects
  • Connect with local arts community and other non-profits concerning marketing and partnership opportunities

The Art Intern will report to Tricia Khutoretsky, Director of the Iraqi Art Project.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Art major, or significant interest and experience with the local art community
  • Experience with stretch-framing and cataloguing
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to manage time and work effectively without close supervision
  • Interest in international art or international peace helpful.

Internship Details:

  • Approximately 10-25 hours per week (or as determined by selected applicant’s schedule).
  • Specific dates of internship are negotiable.
  • Intern may have office space, otherwise can work from home or other location.
  • Compensation: this is an unpaid internship. Intern will gain significant experience working with a nonprofit arts organization. If you are a student, optional college credit can be offered through your university.
