New Media / Video Intern or Volunteer for Advocacy Campaign

The Iraqi and American Reconciliation Project (IARP) is seeking a motivated self-starter for a volunteer new media and video position. The selected applicant will play a key role in shaping a 2011 advocacy campaign around the ongoing Iraqi refugee crisis. The Iraqi refugee crisis remains one of the worst refugee crises in history, with over 4 million displaced. Through a variety of tools and partners around the U.S., this campaign will seek to increase aid to Iraqi refugees, improve the U.S. resettlement process for Iraqi refugees, and pressure the Iraqi and American governments to do more to facilitate the return to Iraq of those refugees who wish to return.
The selected intern or volunteer will be given significant responsibility to organize film and video messaging for the campaign, working closely with staff on the production of online videos and marketing materials. An opportunity to play a key role in an innovative advocacy campaign and an emerging organization, this position will have the benefit of working closely with IARP staff and engaging around issues such as technology, new media, peace, art, non-profit management, film, and education.
Responsibilities will include:
- Playing a key role in the campaign media strategy.
- Assisting staff to edit short video pieces.
- Helping to develop compelling stories from raw footage.
- Attending weekly meetings (by phone if not located in the Minneapolis, MN area).
- Representing IARP at external events and briefing staff.
- Photography and/or graphic design a possibility.
Qualifications:
- Passion for peace, justice and technology for social change.
- Background in media, specifically film and video editing.
- Proficiency with open video and social media strategies a plus.
- Proficiency in Microsoft and Mac OSX platforms.
- Confident in using social media and social networking.
- Ability to work independently.
- High standards of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Graphic design a plus.
- Interest in and knowledge of: international relations, peace and justice issues, emerging technology, and/or non-profit administration a plus.
- Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize, and perform a wide variety of tasks.
- Professional and passionate with a committed work ethic.
Internship Details:
- Approximately 10-25 hours per week (or as determined by selected applicant’s schedule). Please notify us of your expected availability.
- Specific dates of internship are negotiable.
- Compensation: this is an unpaid internship or volunteer position. Successful applicant will gain significant experience in using new media for social change and will play a key role in an advocacy campaign strategy. Optional college credit can be offered through your university.
