In February 2012, IARP partnered with Meet Minneapolis: Official Convention + Visitors Association to host 5 delegates from Minneapolis’ Sister City of Najaf for training on festival and event management. The five delegates met with over 25 government officials and staff from the City of Minneapolis and the Minneapolis convention and hospitality community. Training included sections and speakers on event and festival management, large scale event planning, convention and visitor bureau services, convention center operations, and visitor protocol.
In addition to the training activities, the delegates had the opportunity to interact with many American civilians. One night, volunteers Elise and James Roberts hosted the group at their home. Nazar, one of the delegates, later said, “I never thought I would be in the home of an American. When we drove up to the house, she was expectantly watching for us at her front window. She seemed so excited to have us at her home.”
IARP would like to thank Bill Deef, Vice President of International Relations at Meet Minneapolis, and the whole Meet Minneapolis organization for putting together a great series of meetings and trainings for the delegates, as well as the many volunteers who helped with the visit or met with the delegates.
